From Prototype to Mass Production: What Changes
Scaling a board is a process transition, not a volume number — what actually changes, and how to make it smooth.
What This Guide Covers
Prototype to Mass Production — the questions we get asked most, answered the way our production team answers them.
- What is different at volume
- Keeping prototype and mass-production consistent
- Scaling after NPI — one manufacturer, both runs
Questions & Answers
How do you move from prototype to mass production? (smooth transition)
The core: start DFM/DFT early, validate the BOM and supply chain, freeze programs and process parameters, build the test plan, complete the pilot run, close defects, and establish a mass-production control plan.
Can you scale production after NPI? Can the same manufacturer handle prototype and mass production?
Yes — when the same process chain (same stencil, programs, and parameters) is prepared from the prototype stage, scaling is a controlled ramp-up rather than a re-engineering. Prototype → NPI → mass production on one platform keeps the two consistent.
